History can be empowering

More than 25 years ago, as I completed a series of 12 historical paintings, history showed me that individuals from my community made invaluable contributions to the state. The pioneers in the series, A Pioneering Spirit, A Fight for Liberty and Freedom, helped to provide very basic liberties for us all, in spite of the intense adversity they faced. And truthfully, before this project, I took their sacrifices for granted. Somehow discovering this local history meant something special to me and gave me the push I needed to keep working towards my goals back then. And today their stories are relevant still as we face agendas aimed at erasing this important information about our past. I know its hard to look back at challenging times but in doing so we see our inadequacies and incredible strength which gives us a blueprint to navigate our future with hope.

I hope you’ll visit any of my upcoming exhibits, and events and discover little-known facts about Washington state history for yourself. And visit a great comprehensive resource for American history at https://www.blackpast.org/
