Joyful Noise

I’ve been drawing since I was about 10 years old. One day I watched my aunt Tonie draw a picture. It seemed like what she drew jumped off the page and that was interesting to me. I remember the first day I sat and watched her draw with a charcoal pencil. I mimicked what I saw her doing. It was new to me, to be able to use a pencil, draw a simple line then add curves and shadows and texture to duplicate what I saw in life. This was my first drawing experience that really started it all, my love of art, and drawing and painting. Mostly I was shocked that I could draw like my aunt so easily. Tonie was the source of much inspiration, always encouraging me to pursue and develop my talents. She was a talented singer, musician, artist and writer. She knew how cultivating a gift can be exhausting and exhilarating all at the same time. I painted this portrait of her to help me deal with her passing, and as a dedication to her. Tonie sang like no other person I’ve ever heard. I believe she is making a joyful noise in heaven. This oil painting is entitled “Joyful Noise”.
